Kielhorn's Tree Service (formerly Crank's Tree Service) Reviews
DLP
I am a widowed senior; female with disability. I hired Dustin Kielhorn (owner) (DK), Kielhorn’s Tree Service, and was charged by same to widen and add 45 tons of gravel to my driveway; also, to first lay down top-of-the-line landscape fabric and remove old existing timbers lining my drive. Following, I was shortchanged 15 tons of gravel until speaking up, my driveway looks like a weed fest, and the old existing timbers remain to date (all verifiable). Around the same time, DK agreed to trim trees and clear property lines before installing wire fence desperately needed for my six dogs. I was presented a verbal quote (DK insists to provide customers an oral agreement only; not a written contract) totaling $1,500.00 for the tree service, to be done in two weeks, and completed in one day; to which I agreed. I patiently waited nine months for the tree service, at which time one day turned into two; the cause being that only one man was assigned to nearly all the high and heavy bucket work while driven to exhaustion, DK spending much of his time on the phone and socializing with drop-in buddies; then, DK upcharged my bill $1,000.00, now totaling $2,500.00, with some overhanging limbs remaining, to be done at time of fence install; this fence desperately needed and repeatedly made known to DK, my dogs suffering much in 99-degree in-house temperatures. Although I remained patient, friendly and complimentary; it didn’t take long, after paying him the $1,000.00 upcharge, for me to realize DK had no intention to return and install the fence or complete the other tasks DK gave verbal commitment to do. In time I hired someone else to install the fence. Then, on September 7, 2023, I telephoned DK to complete the remaining tree trimming. Noticeably irate, DK made clear he had no intention to complete the tree trimming while same-time badmouthing the install of the same fence he committed to do, then failed to do; however, DK stated he would pay me back the $1,000.00 upcharge (all verifiable by same-day texts). I accepted his proposal to return to me the $1,000.00 upcharge. To date DK has not. I have reported this to both the Better Business Bureau and the Illinois Attorney General. To date DK has presented no response.

Amazing job! Called them in the morning and by midafternoon they were out doing a job several other tree services refused to do. Will definitely call them in the future.

Recommendations before choosing a Tree Removal Service
- Check the company’s reputation and customer reviews: Look for tree removal companies with positive reviews and a solid reputation. Reading real customer experiences will help you understand the quality of their work, professionalism, and reliability.
- Confirm what is included in the tree removal service: Make sure you clearly understand what is included in the price, such as stump removal, debris cleanup, limb chipping, and any additional fees for large or hazardous trees.
- Ask about safety measures and equipment: Find out what safety protocols and equipment are used, including protective gear, rigging systems, and whether crew members are trained in industry-standard safety practices.
- Verify licensing, insurance, and coverage options: Ensure the company is properly licensed to operate in your state and carries both liability insurance and workers’ compensation to protect you in case of property damage or on-site injuries.
- Request a written quote and service agreement: Always ask for a written quote and review the service agreement carefully so you are clear about pricing, the scope of work, and cancellation or rescheduling policies.
